History of research
The Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries has been founded in 1930 as the first national institution for sea research. Activities include pure scientific research, application of scientific results in order to improve fishery development and coastal management policy and education of young scientists and common people. Laboratory for benthos was founded by Dr. Ante Ercegović, croatian priest and oceanologist (1895-1969).
Construction of the Institute building (1930) Dr. Ante Ercegović, the first director
of the Laboratory for benthos
Laboratory for benthos carries out research in three lab facilities equipped with 2 Olympus stereo-microscopes and 2 Olympus microscopes with necessary equipment for photo and video documentation, photo and video cameras with underwater housings, probes and other necessary electronic and computer equipment. We are also equipped for field research with SCUBA diving gear for 4 scientists, diving compressor, underwater scooters and a rubber boat with an outboard engine.
