The Department is located in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, which is found approximately 45 Km from Larnaka airport and 100 Km from Limassol port. It is supported by three district offices which are located in the three main coastal cities, Limassol, Larnaka and Pafos.


OVERVIEW

The Department of Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment was founded in 1964 and is the center for management and research of marine resources and environment. Its scope of activities includes fisheries and aquaculture management for sustainable development, management of marine and inland waters (angling in reservoirs), monitoring and combating of marine pollution, marine ecology and conservation of endangered marine species and habitats, hydrography, physical oceanography, aid to fishermen, construction and management of fishing shelters and law enforcement in relation to the Fisheries Legislation.
The Fisheries Department also carries out research in multi-disciplinary fields.
This includes research in aquaculture, fisheries, marine ecology, physical oceanography and marine pollution. It has< houses the national centre of the Information System for the Promotion of Aquaculture in the Mediterranean (SIPAM) and the Cyprus Aquaculture Data Base.
Also it is actively involved in various research projects in cooperation with other International Institutions in the framework of EU programmes, regional projects and bilateral cooperation between Mediterranean countries.




Staff:
60 persons including scientific, technical, administrative personnel and boat crew.

Vessels:
4 vessels; the 15 m Triton and the 12 m Alkyon, Amphitrite and Aphrodite which are used for Fisheries Legislation enforcement and research purposes.
