IMBC is located in the center of Iraklio, in the harbor. Iraklio's airport lies close to the town. It takes about 15 minutes by taxi to reach the institute. The IMBC was established in 1987 as a semi-independent research organisation by the Greek Ministry of Industry, Energy, Research and Technology, under the direct supervision of the General Secretariat for Research and Technology. It is a modern competitive research foundation closely cooperating with many European scientific institutes and organisations in projects concerning the marine environment, fisheries, aquaculture and related subjects. IMBC is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories for research in aquaculture, fisheries, marine ecology, management of coastal resources, biological oceanography, remote sensing and biotechnology. The staff of more than 100 includes highly trained personnel in these fields. In addition, the Institute draws upon the staff of the University of Crete, with which it is in active and continuous collaboration. Among the major items of infrastructure are included the research vessel PHILIA, a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) capable of operating at depths of 2000 metres. and a 3.5 million euro facility for research in aquaculture. |
