Potential and Perspective of Native Oyster Restoration in the Adriatic Sea
Critical Decline:
Over 90% of oyster reefs have vanished in some regions, with the European ecoregion facing a status of poor or functional extinction, primarily attributed to overfishing and parasitic diseases.
Restoration Efforts
Significant initiatives have been undertaken in the past two decades to restore native oyster populations and their habitats, emphasizing the crucial role of oysters in ecosystem functioning.
POPOyster Mission
The POPOyster project is pioneering a comprehensive approach in the eastern Adriatic, aiming to generate vital biological and ecological data for the conservation and restoration of the European flat oyster populations in the region.
